Eleven centuries is not an accident.

Architecture. A currency that held its standard for centuries, a functioning tax base, and institutions that outlived the individuals running them. Structure beat charisma.
Adaptability. Territory was lost and regained, trade routes moved, rivals changed. The system re-formed around each shock instead of denying it.
Discipline. Reserves were held for the bad decade, not spent in the good one. That is an unglamorous habit and the reason the whole thing compounded.
